It’s Great for Seniors to Get Out in the Great Outdoors

Building OutsideIt's summertime in the Reading / Berks County area, and the sun and fresh air are beckoning us to spend more time outdoors. Sacred Heart Villa offers an abundance of indoor activities all-year-round (You can see our calendar and newsletter here), but there's nothing like enjoying the beauty of Creation after being cooped up during a winter of cold and COVID!

Our residents enjoy year-round amenities, such as our library to sharpen their mind, a beauty salon to bring out their glow, plus lounges and a social hall for getting together for any reason and no reason. There are exercises for walking and arts for exercising their creativity. Hymn sings and singalongs exercise our residents' vocal cords while word games exercise their wits. We also have a peaceful meditation center on the grounds to allow for exercising souls.

Sacred Heart Villa is perched on a hill overlooking Reading, PA. The grounds are nicely manicured, and there are lovely gardens that residents can enjoy. There is also a covered porch area for shooting the breeze while enjoying the breezy air!porch1

There are also occasional lunch trips and rides to enjoy. Getting "out of the house" on occasion is not only fun — it's good for your health. Recent studies show that exercise can help prevent what are considered premature deaths in populations around the world.

Experts recommend the following six steps to keep active:

  • Go out for a daily walk, wheel, or whatever movement you are able to do.
  • Go for a cycle ride or run if you're able to.
  • Do stretching exercises or yoga for your muscles and joints.
  • If you have a garden, do some gardening - great for stretching and bending.
  • Activity in greenspace or parks and activity with others may have additional mental and social health benefits.
  • Join an online exercise session.

Getting out and seeing new things when possible stimulates your mind as well. The Berks County area is alive with places to go and things to see. There are hiking trails (including the Appalachian Trail), covered bridges, nature areas (like the Wolf Sanctuary of PA and Hawk Mountain), Crystal Cave (Would that be considered "outdoors"?), markets, fairs, all kinds of good stuff. Be sure to do a web search (or have a friend do it for you) to find something you like and can do.

If all you can do is stop and smell the roses, that's fine, too!

The Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ created Sacred Heart Villa (formerly St. Michael Convent) in 2003 with the vision of providing a personal care home for the Sisters and other seniors of southeastern Pennsylvania. The Sisters renovated St. Michael in order to create 35 personal care residential rooms. Sacred Heart Villa officially opened her doors to her first new residents in May 2004, with space for 57 Sisters and 40 other senior residents.

The facility has two residential buildings, a remodeled dining room, a new fireside lounge, library, café, and beauty shop. The chapel remains in the middle of the facility for it truly is the Heart of the community. Each new residential room provides an individual with privacy, safety, and security in an environment of beauty and grace. Mass is celebrated each day and is open to the public.

Sacred Heart Villa is now accepting residents. If you are seeking care for yourself or a loved one, contact Sacred Heart Villa today at 610-929-5751 for a tour. You can also visit us at sacredheartvillapa.org.
